HOMESTAY 07
Unique and authentic experience
Homestays are gaining popularity among Muslim couples for weddings and honeymoons
HOMESTAYS are one of Malaysia’ s unique tourism offerings, especially appealing to travellers who want a closer connection to local culture and daily life. They offer guests the chance to experience traditions, food, and community in a welcoming and personal setting. For years, homestays have been a go-to option for families and groups looking for comfortable and affordable accommodation with a friendly, communal atmosphere.
More recently, homestays have also become a popular choice for weddings and honeymoons. With their cosy settings and cultural charm, they provide a meaningful backdrop for couples looking to celebrate special moments in a peaceful and authentic environment. Some homestays offer event spaces for wedding ceremonies, while others cater to honeymooners seeking a quiet retreat with a local touch.
DEMAND FROM DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL MARKETS
Dato’ Haji Sahariman Hamdan, President of the Malaysian Homestay Operators Association, said that the potential for wedding and honeymoon tourism through the homestay programme was very high, especially among domestic and regional travellers who are looking for a village atmosphere and traditional customs.
" As observed recently, the potential is very high, especially among domestic travellers, with growing interest from international markets as well, particularly from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, and others."
He explained that homestays offer cultural experiences, traditional food, and a calm environment, all of which are well-suited for couples seeking something more authentic and relaxed. He also added that homestays are cost-effective while still providing an exclusive and locally rooted experience.

COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM EXPERIENCE
Touching on Muslim tourists, he mentioned that a growing number of Muslim couples were opting for homestays as their ideal destination for both honeymoons and weddings, as they offer a more Shariah-compliant experience. He noted that village settings provide enhanced privacy, respect for modesty, and a family-oriented atmosphere that aligns with their values. Homestays are also highly adaptable, allowing for customised arrangements that cater to the cultural and religious practices of Muslim guests.
“ For homestays, our focus is on providing a peaceful atmosphere for couples, offering an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. It’ s the perfect setting for reflection and the start of a new chapter. By emphasising Muslim-friendly tourism, couples can also immerse themselves in the village culture, which helps strengthen their bond,” said Sahariman.
“ For instance, they can cook together, plant trees, or go fishing – it’ s not just about staying in the room. This approach brings a renewed sense of traditional marriage customs, offering a unique experience that cities may not be able to provide. It is always related to community-based tourism."
He mentioned that some homestays have begun offering Shariah-compliant honeymoon packages, which include separate rooms from the host family, halal food, and quality activities for
