Championing the halal industry
Selangor has all the facilities for halal players to export their products to the overseas market
BY FATIHAH MANAF
PARTICIPATING in the Malaysia International Halal Showcase ( MIHAS ) 2022 was one of the many examples that showcased Selangor ’ s commitment to championing the halal industry .
Since its halal industry portfolio was established in 2020 , the State has conducted various programmes and activities to advance its halal sector . During the recent MIHAS 2022 , the State took the initiative to organise its own Selangor Pavilion .
Managed by Halal International Selangor ( HIS ), Selangor Pavilion at MIHAS 2022 housed various halal products by Selangor ’ s entrepreneurs under its roof . Famous for its halal food and beverages ( F & B ) segment , the State also had players from other sectors , such as pharmaceuticals , cosmetics and logistics , as the exhibitors at the pavilion .
The pavilion was launched by Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni , Chairman of the State Executive Council ( EXCO ) for Islamic Religious Affairs , Consumer Affairs and Halal Industry Committee . According to Zawawi , the introduction of Selangor ’ s halal industry portfolio amid the Covid-19 pandemic aimed to harmonise and connect its halal players to the party in charge of the State ’ s halal certification .
“ The halal industry is promising and has the potential to expand further . We have more than 5,000 halal certificate holders in Selangor . This is a good thing , indicating halal players ’ positive response to the importance of the halal certification for the products and services .”
He said Selangor had all the facilities for halal players to export their products to the overseas market . He also shared that he had returned from a few countries to gauge the demand and potential for the State ’ s halal products to be marketed there .
“ The halal logo by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia ( JAKIM ) is trusted globally . This gives us the potential and benefit of exploring the global halal market , especially for companies ready to export .
“ We also attracted foreign investors to develop the halal industry in Selangor . So many opportunities and businesses can be developed in sectors such as F & B , personal care , pharmaceuticals , etc .”
Zawawi invited all halal players to join Selangor International Halal Convention ( SELHAC ) 2023 , highlighting its business matching component . The previous SELHAC 2022 recorded an exceptional transaction value of RM37.73 million , surpassing its initial target of RM20 million . Other than business matching activities , the convention featured a forum and exhibition ,
attracting halal players from various States in Malaysia .
EXCHANGE OF MOUS
MIHAS 2022 also witnessed the exchange of memoranda of understanding ( MoUs ) between HIS ( HIS Toyyiba Sdn Bhd ) and its strategic partners , namely Pattani ASEAN Mall , Dewan Perdagangan Islam Malaysia ( DPIM ) Selangor , Halal Street UK , Halal Food Authority ( HFA ) and International Islamic University College Selangor ( KUIS ).
The MoU exchange ceremony indicates the beginning of a collaborative partnership between related parties to mutually and more effectively promote the advancement of the halal industry in various sectors and expand Selangor ’ s halal products to the international market .
