Moms and their babies working out together.
What’ s the reception been like? The reception they received on the day of their soft launch goes to show that Malaysians are ready for more studios like B studios to pop up. Yunny believed there were others who enjoyed working out while they were pregnant as well.
to carry out their daily activities but also not leave their kids behind.
B studios
B Studios located on Jalan Telawi, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur enjoyed its soft launch early June this year. Met with favourable reception, B studios opened its doors to everyone, including mothers with children, pregnant ladies and for their post-natal rehabilitation.
An idea that stemmed from splitting their time for family, work and fitness, it had crossed Shin’ s mine to start a studio together. While mingling with the idea some time last year, coincidentally, they had come across someone selling the space that would eventually become the home to their studios today.
“ We had to move fast, setting up was fast as well as we got the place in April and we opened by June this year”, says Yunny.
Setting up the studio was only one part of the process. Having worked out together in the past, Shin had suggested for all three of them to get certified together as trainers as well. Getting certified together as friends might seem like a fun idea, however, without Shin bringing up the idea, both Nadia and Yunny had found the idea of going to a school to get certified themselves to be unnerving.
“ We were mothers with kids as young as two-years-old and the classes that we would have to take was six hours a week,” lamented Nadia, pointing out how difficult it would have been going at it alone.
Having all three support each other also made things easier, for instance, Nadia had found pumping milk by herself to be uneasy. Having her friends there doing the same helped her overcome the initial queasiness.
Aside from just functioning as a centre to run classes on fitness, B studios was set
up with a vision of building a community. With a lot of misconceptions among the society barring pregnant women from not working out, the studio aimed to educate people and correct these misconceptions.
Shin gives a reminder that the studio despite having classes catered to moms everywhere, is open to everyone at any stage of fitness. This includes men and dads who would like to bond with their families. Adding on, Shin said:“ The idea was always that we are a fitness studio open to all but also a safe space and community for mums to reach their fitness goals with their kids.”
Nadia also pointed out that mothers don’ t have it easy when it comes to regaining their fitness level post pregnancy. Highlighting the dip in their confidence levels, mothers tend to shy away from conventional gyms. B studios on the other hand hopes to reinvigorate this sense of a safe space for the mothers.
Diving into the classes Classes at B studios are crafted to rehabilitate and restore the inner core. One of the aim of the studio is to tackle issues on how pregnant moms are not well educated on the type of fitness workouts they can pursue. Having been certified and trained themselves, all three founders also join in as trainers for some of the classes.
What should be noted is all three mothers are not just certified as fitness personal trainers, but they also come equipped with a specialty in pre-andpost natal fitness to help other mothers. Using their education and experience, they have engineered safe and effective workouts for prenatal and post-natal fitness. Moreover, they have curated experienced instructors for a multidisciplined range of classes for holistic, total-body fitness with yoga, pilates and dance-inspired classes in addition to the traditional cardio, strength and high intensity classes. One novelty is, they also run baby-wearing fitness and yoga classes which allows babies to join their mothers into their post-natal classes.
The studio comes equipped with a kids play area and a baby-changing facility. This is to encourage women to get fit without leaving their kids at home, through pregnancy, post-pregnancy or to simply maintain their fitness.
Acknowledging how Malaysians in the city are constantly looking for flexibility and something out of the ordinary, the studio is planning on introducing new events on a monthly basis. Previous events include‘ Wine O’ Clock’, an idea that came from how moms would be craving for a drink after a day of work. The studio has also introduced other events for dads to join for free with workouts designed for the whole family.
With boutique gyms mushrooming all over the city, B Studios aims to be at the forefront when it comes to curating the right experience for mothers out there. The studio is open to all in the hopes of building a community of like-minded people. Mothers looking for a safe space and a community to get fit but also wanting to spend their time while doing so together with their babies may just find B studios to be the place.
