Malaysia dazzles as a world leader in medical devices
THE Malaysian Investment Development Authority ( MIDA ) and the Association of Malaysian Medical Industries ( AMMI ) released the AMMI Medical Device Industry Status and Outlook 2021 / 2022 Report in Penang for the first time . This year ’ s report emphasised Malaysia ’ s medical device industry ’ s resiliency throughout the Covid-19 epidemic .
AMMI found that 10 of the top 30 medical technology companies manufacture here . Malaysia , Puerto Rico , Ireland , and Costa Rica are leading offshore medical device manufacturing hubs . Malaysia has almost 300 medical device manufacturing enterprises that do everything from regional headquarters and production to research and development ( R & D ).
At a press conference , MIDA CEO Datuk Wira Arham Abdul Rahman said : “ Since 2015 , AMMI has collaborated closely with MIDA to foster the development of the country ’ s medical device industry , and it has made it a priority to help its members to have a positive experience operating their businesses in Malaysia .
Despite industry challenges , AMMI has been the main investment facilitator for its members . AMMI has assisted industry leaders organise training programmes for 2,647 Malaysians , improving their job prospects .
MIDA ’ s key partner AMMI is optimistic about Malaysia ’ s future . AMMI has promoted Malaysia as a regional and Asian investment destination , recruiting large medical device companies . Datuk Wira Arham stated that MIDA mediates between companies and local regulators to ensure quality standards and regulations meet global demand .
With the CPTPP ’ s ratification , AMMI Chairman Andy Lee said , “ Malaysia will continue to attract more foreign direct investment in medical device production .” AMMI believes the business may grow and capitalise on the US $ 745 billion global medical device market by 2030 .
During the pandemic , AMMI members invested more in Malaysia , showing their confidence in the country . Sixty-three per cent of its members plan to develop , and this tendency is projected to continue .
AMMI members have consistently invested more in Malaysia as a MedTech hotspot . AMMI survey respondents expect to invest RM1.4 billion in expansion , RM389 million in new goods and RM158 million in R & D / COE and Industry 4.0 .
According to the study , AMMI members purchased RM3.92 billion in raw materials and services from local vendors and SMEs . AMMI will host the first Malaysia MedTech Industry Summit in Penang on Dec 1 , 2022 to improve medical device supply chain resilience . Local vendors will meet medical device makers during the conference .
Reflecting Malaysia ’ s long-term growth , MIDA will continue to work with reputable associations like AMMI to ensure the nation remains welcoming for more investors as it pursues game-changing measures to attract high-quality investments that generate high-income jobs , increase export value , and strengthen Malaysia ’ s domestic supply chain ecosystem . – The Health
Raising diabetes awareness
THE Endocrine Institute of Putrajaya Hospital , Malaysian Endocrine & Metabolic Society ( MEMS ), and Novo Nordisk Pharma Malaysia raised diabetes awareness on World Diabetes Day ( WDD ) 2022 at Putrajaya .
This year ’ s World Diabetes Day theme is Education to Protect Tomorrow – the topic of the second year of the World Diabetes Day 2021-23 campaign that argues for the need for increased access to quality diabetes education for healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes .
Kicking off the series of educational activities was the Diabetes Fun Walk around the Putrajaya Hospital neighbourhood for the public . To advance , runners had to complete diabetes education station games .
The Diabetes Fair , which included educational booths and hospital department speakers , accompanied the marathon . In addition to public awareness , the Endocrine Institute held diabetes education and capacity training workshops for healthcare personnel .
Dato ’ Dr Asmayani Khalib , Deputy Director-General ( Medical ), Ministry of Health Malaysia , officiated the event together with Datuk Dr Zanariah Hussein , Head of the Endocrinology Subspecialty Service of the Ministry of Health , Dr Nurain Mohd Noor , President of MEMS , Dr Mohammad Khairol Anwar Yusop Deputy Director ( Endocrine ) of Hospital Putrajaya and Richard Abela , Vice President and General Manager of Novo Nordisk Pharma Malaysia .
Diabetes now affects one in five adult Malaysians , according to the National Health and Morbidity Survey . Dr Asmayani stressed the need for a holistic disease prevention and treatment approach .
Diabetics are increasing , straining healthcare systems . “ Healthcare professionals need quality diabetes education on how to detect and diagnose the condition early and provide the best possible care , while people living with diabetes need ongoing education to understand their condition and carry out the daily self-care essential to staying healthy and avoiding complications ,” said Dr Asmayani .
The sentiment was echoed by Datuk Dr Zanariah Hussein , who added that “ with the rising number of Malaysians being diagnosed with diabetes , we must double our efforts to prevent it from escalating .
World Diabetes Day is an annual global awareness campaign initiated in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation ( IDF ) and the World Health Organisation ( WHO ) in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes . The campaign aims to promote advocacy efforts and spread awareness of the importance of treating and managing the disease as a critical global health issue . – The Health
Johnson conferred Datukship by King
REVON MEDIA Sdn Bhd Managing Editor Johnson Fernandez was bestowed a Datukship by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri ’ ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on Dec 8 .
The veteran journalist with more than 40 years of experience in the media industry was awarded the Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang , which carries the title Datuk , at the Istana Abu Bakar in Pekan , Pahang .
Johnson , 65 , said he did not expect to receive the recognition for his involvement in journalism and described it as a recognition for the country ’ s sports media practitioners .
Starting his career as a sports reporter at The National Echo in 1979 , Johnson worked in several publications such as The Star , The Malay Mail and The Eastern Times . He was also a columnist with The Sunday Mail .
He was The Malay Mail Sports Editor from 1998-2003 . In 1994 , he received the Sports Journalist of the Year Award . He was also the General Secretary of the Asian Sports Press Union ( ASPU ) and the International Sports Press Association ( AIPS ) committee member .
During that period , he also often covered sports news involving Al-Sultan Abdullah and his father , the late Sultan Ahmad Shah , both well-known for their passion for sports , especially football .
“ I would like to thank our sports-loving King for recognising my efforts as a sportswriter . I have covered every level of Malaysian sports , and it has been a rewarding career where I met and grew up with many famous personalities and have many good memories ,” he said .
His experience and expertise in sports journalism also allowed Johnson to cover major sports events such as the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and Commonwealth Games in Auckland in 1990 , among others . Revon Media recently published a collectible book on the 2022 Qatar World Cup .
