“It’s an ancient

Drinking a glass

WANTED to start off my piece this
month on a rather sad note.
Within a week I lost two dear friends
from cancer and attended their funerals
two days apart of each other. Both were
in their 60’s.
Another one died three days earlier of heart
related ailments.
I kept wondering if their conditions could have
been prevented if only they had taken a more bal-
anced and healthier lifestyle.
One of them an associate professor of media died
of lymphoma even after undergoing six months of
chemotherapy since January.
He was one who enjoyed his daily dose of teh
tarik, nasi kandar, roti canai and all those comfort
food that is associated with obesity, heart disease and
diabetes. Over the years we enjoyed our sessions at
the mamak either in Kuala Lumpur or Penang.
Exercise was never his priority.
He consumed 15 pills a day to manage his blood
pressure and cholesterol levels. You could always
hear his heavy breathing whenever we were in a
discussion. He learnt to live with it and swore the
pills were the only cure for his ailments.
In contrast, I have a few friends and former class-
mates who continue to be active in sports and keep
fit. They are the ones who love their round of golf,
brisk walking, cycling while a few go to the extremes

LAUGHTER
A thief entered a house
mid-afternoon. He tied up
the woman and at
knife-point asked the man to
hand over the jewellery and
money.
Man started sobbing and
said, Bro, you take anything
you want. You can kill me
also. But please untie the
rope and free her.
Thief: “You really love your
wife!!”
Man: “No, mine will arrive
shortly.”

by playing badminton, running marathons, climbing
hills and so on — anything to keep the body and mind
active.
Recent research in Britain has discovered that
runners experience a certain high similar to smoking
marijuana. No wonder they continue to indulge in
these activities that make them happier and healthier.
One thing for sure — one has to drink at least two
to three litre of water daily to keep the body hydrated.
I discovered that the friends that I lost due to
cancer did not like to drink water. They consumed
other beverages, fizzy drinks with lots of sugar and
milk.
You can find many articles that strongly suggest
that consuming two to three litre of water a day will
help to reduce the risk of cancer including prostate
cancer.
It’s an ancient Ayurvedic treatment. Drinking a
glass of water in the morning on an empty stom-
ach purifies the body’s internal system. It cleans
the colon making it easier for the body to absorb
nutrients from food. This is achieved through the
production of new blood.
This has an immense restorative effect in the
body, aiding in the relieve of constipation, headaches
and lots more.
The best thing to do is to continue drinking
enough water daily to maintain a healthy mind and
body.

water during a 20-day
filming assignment
off the Penang waters
helped him to maintain
his hydration and energy
levels instead of drinking
fizzy or isotonic drinks.
