LEARNING JOURNEY: With guidance from ECPs, new users build confidence for seamless contact lens practicing the insertion and removal technique
THE recent rise in new contact lens wearers can be attributed to advancements in lens technology and tailored patient care. Innovations such as multifocal and myopia management lenses have become increasingly popular, meeting the diverse needs of consumers.
As more individuals seek convenient and effective vision solutions, the optical industry is adapting to support this growing demand.
Paris Miki TRX Branch Manager and Optometrist Lee Min Er has navigated the evolving world of contact lenses for over eight years. With her expertise and passion for eye health, she reflects on the advancements that have led to a significant increase in the number of new contact lens wearers over recent years.
ADVANCEMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY
With 2025 marking a pivotal year, Lee attributes the uptick in contact lens users to " advanced lens technology, which comes with a specialised correction."
Multifocal and toric lenses have emerged as key players, effectively addressing common vision issues such as presbyopia and astigmatism. This progression has not only enhanced visual performance for wearers but also increased patient satisfaction.
Another critical development has been the rise of myopia management lenses, especially among children and teenagers. " Not only do they correct the vision, but also slow down the short-sightedness progression," she explained.

these solutions invaluable for families, redefining how optometrists address the needs of younger patients.
INNOVATIVE PRACTICES
Lee ' s approach to onboarding new contact lens users is rooted in a rigorous and thorough process.
" First of all, it is a history taking," she emphasised, noting that understanding a patient ' s lifestyle and occupation is fundamental to selecting the right lenses. This personalised approach ensures that new wearers feel comfortable and confident in their choice.
Key to her strategy is the trial fit session, which provides patients with a hands-on experience.
" I always tell the patient that we wouldn ' t just provide them the trial lenses and you try them at home." By closely monitoring the fitting and addressing potential discomfort, she fosters trust and manages expectations, crucial for long-term wear.
TRAINING FOR SUCCESS
The success of new contact lens wearers extends beyond technology and personalised care; ongoing education is vital for eye care professionals( ECPs). Lee believes that ongoing training and education reduce the early drop-out rate.
ECPs equipped with the latest information enable patients to feel at ease and informed about their journey with contact lenses.
Challenges, such as anxiety around lens insertion and removal, often deter new wearers. To combat this, Lee provides straightforward demonstrations, assuring them that the process is simpler than they expect.
She even goes so far as to offer video references for home practice, ensuring that patients are comfortable and prepared before they leave her care.
Looking ahead, Lee sees considerable opportunities for growth in the contact lens market. The demand for speciality lenses continues to rise, especially as the global population ages.
" I believe that these myopia management lenses actually present a significant high growth and long-term opportunity," she said, highlighting the imminent need for innovative solutions as more individuals grapple with vision correction.- The HEALTH
